Popcorn Ceiling Scraper Niagara

Popcorn ceilings – also known as cottage cheese, stucco, acoustic, stipple, or textured ceilings were widely used in residential housing. The problem with popcorn ceilings is that they catch dust and cobwebs making them difficult to clean, and depending on the age of the ceiling, could very well be full of asbestos. Generally, houses built before 1985 have the potential to contain asbestos, as it wasn’t until 1981 that asbestos was banned in Canada. Contractors were still allowed to use existing inventories of products containing asbestos. Popcorn ceilings that contain asbestos should never be scraped off without taking the right precautions first. Removal of an asbestos-laden popcorn ceiling can pose a danger to your health due to the inhalation of asbestos fibres. If your home was built after 1985, there is no concern of asbestos in your popcorn ceilings and we can give you an estimate and do the job no problem. But if your house was built before 1985, an asbestos test will be required before we can give an estimate.  If the test comes back positive for asbestos, then we will not be able to perform the removal. You'll have to contact an asbestos abatement specialist instead.

Of course there are other reasons why you may want to have your popcorn ceiling scraped besides the potential of asbestos being concealed within it. One reason being that a popcorn ceiling can add a bit of texture to the look of a room, but it is an outdated design by today’s standards, with flat ceilings and hand painting your ceiling being more popular options in modern homes. Another reason you may want to ditch the popcorn ceiling is if you’re considering selling your home, popcorn ceilings can pose a concern to potential buyers, and some will shy away from making an offer on a property if they know they have renovations waiting for them.

We can aid you in the scraping and removal of your popcorn ceiling, unpainted popcorn ceilings being the easiest to remove, as they are porous and only need a water-based solution to begin soaking and scraping it clean. Painted popcorn ceilings require more prep work as there is an extra layer to permeate before removal of the ceiling can begin.

We are POPCORN CEILING REMOVAL PROS

Aside from prepping your popcorn ceiling for scraping, some other things to get ready and protect from the incoming particle fallout are baseboards, windowsills, door frames, light switches, light fixtures, carpeting, wooden floorboards, furniture, cupboards/pantries, and closet doors. The dust caused by having your ceiling scraped can be incredibly fine and easily settle into any cracks and crevices, so it’s important to seal/block off any potential entry points. If you are aware of whether or not the popcorn ceiling you are having scraped contains asbestos, we would even recommend removing any upholstered furniture from the room(s) prior to having your ceiling(s) scraped.
